Intermittent positional axillary vein compression – a rare complication of CIED implantation

An 81-year-old male with an implanted DDD pacemaker reported fluctuating edema accompanied by pain and paresthesia affecting the hand arm on side had been implanted. These symptoms, which developed several weeks after procedure, were more pronounced in morning resolved during day. Venography showed axillary vein compression, whose severity varied different positions. Changing location of pocket restored normal venous blood flow at site compression relieved patient’s was confirmed follow-up.

The case is reported of a competitive canoeist with intermittent axillary vein obstruction secondary to shoulder girdle muscle hypertrophy. The anatomy of the axilla, pathology of the axillary vein, and reported cases of sports injuries involving the axillary vein are discussed.
